2018 Grand National Review and Results

Davy Russell Grand National 2018

Check out our analysis of all 12 finishers in the 2018 Grand National, won by Tiger Roll at an SP of 10-1. Favourite, Blaklion was brought down at the very first fence, paving the way for Tiger Roll to claim victory. Though, the going was heavy to soft with rain in the week leading up to the big race. We saw many big contenders withdrawn in the days and hours prior including Minella Rocco, Vicente and Beeves.

Tiger Roll was well-supported after winning the Cross Country race at the 2018 Cheltenham Festival. There have been many concerns that the small stature of this horse meant he wouldn’t handle with the big Grand National fences. Though, with a 10-13 weight, he proved them wrong.

Tiger Roll’s career earnings are now levelling at £801,983 after winning £500,000 for the 2018 Grand National.

At just 8 years-old Tiger Roll could easily be a return contender in this race for many years to come. However, it goes without saying his 10st-13lbs weight will be noticeably increased should he make 2019 Grand National.

It was an Irish clean sweep as the Willie Mullins-trained Pleasant Company was a close second. His jockey, David Mullins, won the race in 2016, so it was nice to see Davy Russell hoist the trophy at the end of the day.

Irish champion trainer, Gordon Elliott, trained the winner and the third-placed Bless The Wings. Tony Martin-trained Anibale Fly finished fourth.

The best British runner was Milansbar in fifth, who also provided Bryony Frost with a completion in her first Grand National.

It was heartache for the 2018 Grand Nation favourite Blaklion. He was sent off a well-supported 14/1, but was brought down at the very first fence by the fall of Perfect Candidate. Only 12 runners finished from the field of 38. 7-year-old Baie Des Iles rounded out the finishers but she was around 85+ lengths behind Tiger Roll!
